Match Report

Salters managed to gain a valuable point despite not playing well.

Salters went 2-0 down early on and looked in trouble. However we somehow rallied to score 3 good goals at the end of the first half to go 3-2 up at half time. The first Salters goal was from Paul Milligan who chased down his own clearance from his own box to run through the defence and lob the goalkeeper.  The second goal came from a through ball to David Jamieson, a brilliant first touch put him clean through, he took his time and finished low into the corner.  The third goal came after good pressure on the goalkeeper as he tried to clear a pass back, the pressure forced the error and Darren Smith rolled the ball home.  Salters also missed 5 easy chances. Paul Milligan, David Jamieson, Darren Smith and Richard Murray should all have scored. We also had two disallowed goals for offside.

In the second half Salters started better. We went 4-2 up after good work down the right hand side by Richard Murray who sent over a ball that David Jamieson who rolled the ball home.  By this time in the match tempers were starting to flair and there were several bookings, silly tackles and pointless arguments all over the pitch. The referee had a hard time after every decision he made. Newton Heath got a goal back from a corner. The free header from 5 yards was terrible from Salters point of view and gave Newton Heath something to fight for.  Newton Heath equalised with the softest of penalty awards. Ryan Newton cleanly winning the ball and clearing it, however the penalty was given and the game finished 4-4.

Salters did not play well and Newton Heath were the better team. However we still created enough chances to win this game and in future when we do not play well we will have to take these chances.  The average age of the teams showed that Salters have a lot of young players and that perhaps experience was the key factor. Overall Salters did well to get a point away from home.
