Match Report

Salters gained a valuable three points at home to Newton Heath at Easthouses. This match followed the pattern of the previous two meetings between the teams with Newton Heath playing some great football at times but Salters battling away and refusing to give up. Salters had to make some changes for this game, goalkeeper Shane Thomson had to play centre midfield after late call offs from three Salters players, John Paget went back in goals and had one of his best games for Salters.

Salters opened the scoring through Paul Nelson. Paul blasted home a free kick from near enough the sideline straight into the far top corner, an unstoppable shot.  Newton Heath came back into the game and scored two good goals to go into half time 2-1 ahead.

Salters equalised soon after the break. Paul Milligan played a through ball to Richard Murray who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. Again Newton Heath came back and after a mighty scramble in the box the centre forward lashed the ball home from 8 yards.  Salters had to dig deep and for the last 10 minutes of the game we went all out attack. We equalised after a long ball over the full back to Paul Nelson who cut inside and crossed low and hard for captain Steven Illingworth to drive him a volley. Excellent finish from the centre half.  We won the game late on thanks to David Jamieson who skinned the defender down the right hand side, cut in and slotted the ball home low to the far corner.

It is a complete mystery why Newton Heath are bottom of our league. In the three games we have played against them they have played better football than any of the other teams we have faced this season. We were fortunate to grab the three points, however we did work hard right to the last kick and the players can be proud of that.
