Match Report

Salters went in to thier first ever away Scottish Cup tie looking to match last year's brilliant run to the last 32. However we knew that opposition Burns Tavern would provide stiff competition and we would have to be on our game to avoid defeat.

Salters started slowly with Burns having a lot of the play. They created one or two half chances and Salters looked a little nervous.

They took the lead when a misplaced shot was glanced home by the centre forward. Burns could have added to the lead but Salters stood firm and began to get into the game. Salters got level when Paul Nelson swung over a cross and Paul Milligan rose highest at the back post to head home. Salters had a few chances to take the lead, Mikey Thomson was a 60 yard run through the centre of the park, playing a one-two with Paul Milligan and then sending his shot towards the bottom corner of the net however the goalkeeper produced a truely magnificent save to claw the ball out. Soon after Paul Nelson was denied by another brilliant save after smashing a free kick from 20 yards goalwards, it looked in all the way however again the goalkeeper somehow got there. Half time 1-1.

From the first whistle to the last whistle in the second half Salters were by far the better team. We got a foot on the ball and created many chances. We went 2-1 when Richard Murray burst down the right hand side and squared the ball to Danny Watson who couldnt miss from 6 yards. Richard Murray got Salters third goal, racing on to a through ball and then calmly finishing with a delicate chip over the goalkeeper. Salters got a fourth when Paul Nelson chased a lost cause and robbed the goalkeeper and walked the ball into the net. There were other chances for Paul Milligan, Richard Murray, Paul Nelson and Mikey Thomson. However it finished 4-1 and Salters fully deserved the win based on the 2nd half performance.

This was a real show of character from Salters. One nil down away from home against a very good team however we stuck together, worked hard and played some good football.

The whole day was brilliant, in particular the coach journey home which is now legendary. Lets hope we can advance further in this cup and get another away day. The whole occasion was brilliant, but of course the 4-1 is the most important thing.

John Paget, Kris Murdoch (Ryan Newton), Steven Illingworth, Michael Jones, Darren Smith, Richard Murray (Shane Thomson), Stephen Brown (Steven Duncan), Danny Watson, Mikey Thomson, Paul Nelson, Paul Milligan.
