Match Report

In horrible conditions at the 3G astro pitch at Saughton, Salters collected another valuable 3 points against Newton Heath.

With the wind to our advantage first half we went 2-0 up through Paul Nelson. The first was a beauty, Paul robbing the defender before smashing home from 25 yards. Then Paul got to a Paul Milligan through ball before the goalkeeper and defender to send a shot in to the top corner from 16 yards. With Newton Heath unable to get out of their own half due to the wind and constant Salters pressure the score at half time was 2-0 to Salters.

Newton Heath had the wind advantage in the second half and pushed forward in search of goals. They got one back in fortunate circumstances, the long throw-in catching in the wind and blowing straight over the Salters goalkeeper John Paget and into the net, the referee thought John got finger tips to the ball and awarded the goal. Salters however pushed forward and got the decisive third goal, good play in centre midfield from Paul Milligan sent Richard Murray clean through, his shot was saved by the goalkeeper but Paul Nelson reacted first to bundle the ball home. Newton Heath had most of the possession after this and got a late goal back from a set piece; however Salters battled well and held on for the win.

The conditions ruined a lot of the game, both teams were unable to get out of there own half much with the wind against them. However both teams continued to try and play football and Salters just edged it on the day. The whole Salters team dug in and played well, but again man of the moment Paul Nelson was brilliant and made the difference when we needed it.

10 league games, 10 league wins in a row.

Well done Salters.
