Match Report

Salters took on Gorgie for the first time ever in the League Cup on one of the worst pitches most of us will ever come across. At first glance before the match the pitch appeared to be playable, however during the warm up it became clear the whole centre of the pitch was like a swimming pool and despite efforts to clear the water it turned into one giant mud bath, which meant the ball could not roll at all in whole central area.

Despite this Salters tried to get the ball down and play football. We took the lead after Paul Milligan turned the defender and crossed for Paul Nelson to score. Stephen Brown was next on the score sheet, reacting first after a corner had not been cleared to smash the ball into the roof of the net. Stephen Brown got his second soon after, beating the off side trap to volley home a Shane Thomson free kick. Then Richard Murray coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after a foul on Paul Nelson. A couple of other decent chances and penalty claims for Salters during the first half, however it ended 4-0.

Salters continued to push forward in the second half and got another six goals. Steven Illingworth headed home from a set piece to make it 5-0. Paul Nelson went through to get his second of the game after good work from Richard Murray. Then Stephen Brown got a very well deserved hat trick with a simple finish from a Paul Milligan cut back. Paul Milligan got his first, shooting home from 18 yards, Paul Milligan got his second soon after, this time shooting into the other corner. However the ninth goal for Salters is the goal that stood out. Defensive centre midfielder Shane Thomson, with an impressive record of 2 goals in 27 years, ran through the Gorgie defence in a Lionel Messi type run before coolly slotting home, much to the delight of the whole Salters team! Gorgie got two goals in the second half, excellent finishes, particularly the first which was a dipping curling effort on the angle from 22 yards. It’s also worth mentioning that Salters missed many easy chances, Paul Nelson, Paul Milligan, Stephen Brown, Richard Murray, Stephen Crawford and Neil Wilson all missing complete sitters. However 10-2 was a good result on the day.

Newton Heath in the next round, which will be an extremely difficult game.
